CHILDREN ON THE MOVE

Millions of children are displaced every day for multiple reasons such as poverty, global warming or armed conflicts. In 2021, 36.5 million children are reported to be displaced worldwide.

 

The United Nations Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration recognizes the guiding principle  « of the best interests of the child at all times, as a primary consideration in all situations concerning children in the context of international migration, including unaccompanied and separated children ». 

 

Children on the move are even more vulnerable because they may face trafficking, exploitation or abuse of any kind. Additional protections must be provided in these particular cases. Their situation must not be synonymous with the loss of rights such as the right to education, health, access to water, protection...

To familiarize frontline workers with the implementation of alternatives to detention for migrant children that respect the best interests of the child.

CHILDREN'S RIGHTS IN THE REGULARIZATION PROCESS:
THE SITUATION OF THE UNACCOMPANIED MINOR

Provide to the professionals concerned the legal guarantees for unaccompanied minors, concerning the determination of their age, the possibilities of family reunification, or a placement under guardianship while respecting the best interests of the child.

ALTERNATIVE
CARE

 

Provide guidelines to field workers in order to answer to each child's care and protection needs, through the establishment of alternative care.
